Friends-in-Wine,

Thank you for the overwhelming reception of our previous offering of 1991/1994 López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva.

True to our commitment to bringing the best wines from Rioja and Spain, we are pleased to announce that we are now bringing in the wines of one of Rioja’s oldest and prestigious wineries, Bodegas Faustino (Faustino Gran Reserva and its Campillo Gran Reserva). We also have a Gran Reserva White from Vina Tondonia and a Txakoli from Istas Mendi. These would be our last offerings for 2010, so make sure to stock up on them.

REDS:

  • 1964 Bodegas Faustino I Rioja Gran Reserva – P8500/bottle (P8100 for orders of 6 bottles and above).

The world-renowned Bodegas Faustino’s roots go back to 1861 and, its flagship wine, the Faustino I Gran Reserva, was first bottled in 1960. Currently, it’s considered as the best-selling Gran Reserva from Rioja.

Vintage 1964 is widely recognized as the legendary vintage in Rioja’s wine-producing history. Hugh Johnson, the respected wine writer, chose Rioja as the
wine of the 1964 vintage, as he wrote in 2009:

“I am ready to name my wine of the vintage. Having loved the Latour, the great Haut-Brion and Petrus, a memorable Pavie, many glorious Burgundies, as well as Champagnes and German wines, I give the golden palm to Rioja.”

The New York Times’ wine columnist, Eric Asimov, not long ago described the 1964 Faustino I Gran Reserva wine as “wonderful – complex and ethereal” (See: http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/22/spaniards-of-a-certain-age/). As with all our offerings, this aged jewel will be coming directly from the producer’s own cellars, so provenance over its 46-years has been perfect.

We’ve had this wine recently and loved it:

  • 1995 Bodegas Campillo Rioja Gran Reserva – P2000/bottle (P1850 for orders of 6 bottles and above).

Campillo comes from Bodegas Faustino. Faustino’s owner, Don Julio Faustino Martinez, dreamt of creating a bodega in Rioja inspired by the great chateaus of Bordeaux. The 1995 Campillo Gran Reserva is a deep, rich, ripe, round, concentrated, dark & softly-fruited tinto Riojano made of 100% tempranillo from low-yielding 100-year-old vines, aged for 24 months in 3-year-dried Allier oak casks. For whatever it is worth, this particular wine was the only Riojan Gran Reserva to be awarded the highest Citadelles Award at the Les Citadelles du Vin celebrated in Bordeaux, France. It’s latest rating from Wine Advocate is “90”, if that matters.

WHITES:

  • 1987 Bodegas López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Blanco – P4000/bottle (P3750 for orders of 6 bottles and above).

This, an aged Riojan white wine, is made up of 90% viura and 10% malvasía grapes from López de Heredia’s proprietary Tondonia vineyard, aged 9 years in oak and 10 or so more years in bottle before release. A very limited number of bottles of this aficionado’s wine will be available.

  • 2008/2009 Bodegas ItsasMendi No. 7 Txakoli – P1350/bottle (P1220 for orders of 6 bottles and above).

Txakoli, basically made from the indigenous hondarribi zuri grape, is the typical white wine of northern Spain’s Basque region, otherwise known as the País Vasco. This particular producer is based in Gernika (Guernica) within the D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina which is generally recognized to produce fruitier, rounder txakoli compared to D.O. Getariako Txakolina’s much more severe, bone-dry style of txakoli. Traditionally and regionally, txakoli is paired with grilled, steamed or baked fresh shellfish and fish dishes.

For whatever it is worth, the 2008 Itsasmendi No. 7 received the Bachuus de Oro award (the highest award of the Spanish Union of Wine Tasters), while the 2009 Itsasmendi No. 7 received the Bacchus de Plata award from the same body.

As always, all these are wines we have repeatedly tried, enjoyed and buy for ourselves. As you can see, the Campillo Gran Reserva and Itsas Mendi are very reasonably priced as they are meant to be readily enjoyed at the coming Christmas season’s bigger gatherings. The Faustino Gran Reserva and Viña Tondonia are, on the other hand, extra special – meant to be shared in smaller gatherings/meals among close friends and confirmed lovers of fine wines.

Please let me know if you are interested in any of the foregoing wines. Of course, if have in mind any specific wines/vintages of López de Heredia’s and Faustino’s lines (Tondonia, Bosconia, Gravonia, etc., whether old or current vintages, tinto or blanco, crianza, reserva or gran reserva), please do not hesitate to let us know.

Delivery is anticipated to be made sometime in mid-to late November. Please do let us know soonest as it is best to avoid the Christmas shipping rush.

Best regards,
A
